Default Today - Last Day of Red Snapper Season

Today is the last day of Red Snapper Season. Remember when you read the announcement below that it actually closes 1 minute past midnight.

I heard on the news this morning that they are going to re-open Federal Waters of "some" parts of the Florida Coast today but I haven't gotten anything from NOAA about where.

Reminder – Recreational Red Snapper Season Closes July 24

The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council reminds recreational anglers that the Gulf of Mexico red snapper recreational season closes 12:01 a.m. local time July 24, 2010. The season will reopen Jun 1, 2011. However, because of the Deepwater Horizon/BP Oil Spill and the resulting fishing area closure, a reduction in effort may have prevented the recreational quota from being filled. The Gulf Council has requested that, should NOAA Fisheries determine the quota has not been filled, that it conduct rulemaking to reopen recreational red snapper fishing later this year to allow the harvest of the remaining quota.

The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council is one of eight regional fishery management councils established by the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act of 1976. The Council prepares fishery management plans designed to manage fishery resources in the federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Just read my e-mail. Thanks Cameron for sending me this.

Still not good news for Red Snapper fishing in our area.

Yeah, I'm going to head out after work this afternoon and try to get a few before they close. I can't believe they haven't extended the season. I'll bet there wasn't 20% of the normal harvest this season. The charters were busy looking for oil and federal waters were closed most of the season.

We sure as H*LL better get a longer season next year!!
