GPS LATEST UPDATE

The Office of Space Commercialization seeks comments on a plan to transition the installed base of codeless and semi-codeless Global Positioning System (GPS) user equipment to next-generation equipment utilizing the modernized civil GPS signals known as L2C and L5. The plan was developed under the auspices of the National Executive Committee for Space-Based Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT).

Under the plan, the Department of Defense, as the operator of GPS, will continue enabling codeless/semi-codeless GPS access until December 31, 2020, by which time the L2C and L5 signals will be available on 24 or more modernized GPS satellites. Users should
re-equip to use the modernized signals, since codeless/semi-codeless GPS access cannot be assured beyond 2020.

I think it means, plan on buying a new GPS. Mine is pretty old right now and needs replaced. I'd like to hold out until these new ones come on the market. Anyone have any idea when that might be?

I just posted it as an FYI. The date for the conversion is 2020.

Hopefully, the new system will be "MO Better" like Digital / HD TV is far superior to the Flinstones model we have in our garage.

By the time 12 years roll by, I'm sure most of us will be ready for a new GPS anyway.

Smells like Loran... Its the government; by the time 2020 rolls around this whole thing could turn 180 degrees or go away all together.

This won't affect my blood pressure any time soon.
