Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council to convene its Socioeconomic Panel via conference call (listening stations available)

Tampa, Florida * The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council will convene via conference call its Socioeconomic Panel (SEP) to discuss Reef Fish Amendment 30B, which contains potential alternatives that propose to:

set management thresholds and targets for gag


set total allowable catch (TAC) for gag and red grouper

set commercial and recreational allocations for gag and red grouper

establish accountability measures for gag and red grouper

adjust commercial quotas for gag red grouper and the shallow-water grouper aggregate

adjust recreational management measures for groupers, which includes:
o bag limits
o size limits
o closed seasons

address bycatch and bycatch mortality of groupers create new marine reserves and/or extend the duration of existing marine reserves

address regulatory compliance of federally permitted reef fish vessels when fishing in state waters

The SEP, which is made up of Sociologists and Economists, will convene March 25, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. EDT, and conclude no later than 3:00 p.m. EDT. Listening stations are available at the following locations:

Although other non-emergency issues not on the agenda may come before the SEP for discussion, in accordance with the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (M-SFCMA), those issues may not be the subject of formal action during these meetings. Actions of the SEP will be restricted to those issues specifically identified in the agenda and any issues arising after publication of this notice that require emergency action under Section 305(c) of the M-SFCMA, provided the public has been notified of the Council's intent to take action to address the emergency.

The listening stations are physically accessible to people with disabilities. Requests for sign language interpretation or other auxiliary aids should be directed to Tina Trezza at the Council at least five working days prior to the meeting.

The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council is one of eight regional fishery management councils established by the Magnuson*Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act of 1976. The Council prepares fishery management plans designed to manage fishery resources in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.
