The First Baptist Church Of Niceville Men's Ministry had their annual Memorial Day fishing trip on The New Florida Girl with Captain Westbrook and his wife Suzie, Monday 5-24-07.
44 excited fishermen left the docks and cleared the pass around 7am to be greeted with 4 to 5' seas out if the southeast. Had several to turn green and began a early chum line before we cleared the Sea Bouy.
We ran about an hour south and were at our first stop around 8:45.
I was anxious to break in my new high speed (48" of line per crank) Penn Torx reel and Shimano Trevala rod. The Torx was spooled with a mono backer topped with 80lb Power Pro, 20' of 60 lb mono shock leader, 8 oz egg sinker, swivel and 5' of Ande pink Flourocarbon tied to a 5/0 owner wire circle hook.
This is an awesome rod and reel, light, but with lots of power.
My 1st drop with a whole butterflied Boston Mackeral was hammered as I cleared my line after hitting the bottom. After a heathy fight, the Penn Torx made quick work of the the first snapper of the day and it came over the rail hitting the deck at a respectable 10lbs.
As I unhooked my fish and dropped her into my basket, I looked around and big red snapper were hitting the deck all around the The New Florida Girl. This continued for a good 15 to 20 minutes before the Captain said, "Let's move on", not wanting to total clean out his awesome honey hole.
Well, it turned out after a fish count by the deck hands, we had caught over half of our limit on that first stop. ( no shortage of Red Snapper on this hole).
We fished to the east the rest of the day and actually started culling 5 lbs and under snapper. The deck hands said they could not believe they were culling 5 lb snapper !
We had our limit of snapper along with several nice 10 to 20lb Gag Grouper, Triggerfish and some healthy Mingos and headed in around 2pm.
What an unbelievable day of fishing on the Gulf of Mexico !
I would highly recommend Captain Westbrook and wife Suzie's ( Suzie makes one of the best hamburgers I has ever eaten) The New Florida Girl along with their very friendly and helpful deck hands.
The boat is a piece of Destin History, being the last of the original Destin Fishing Fleet Boats. It was in dry dock three months last winter and was totally refinished and overhauled and is in unbelievable condition.
One of the best charter trips I've ever been on.
(It was nice for a change not to have to clean fish and wash the boat!)
By the way Candy, the majority of Captain's Westbrooks artificial reefs are chicken coops
Tight Lines,
